Waterpolo: Brugha agony in Irish Cup
Saturday, April 26, 2008
There was disappointment all round in the Brugha camp after last weekend's
below par performance in the Irish Senior Cup.
They were defending champions and went into the tournament with a sixteen
game unbeaten run in the National League under their belt.
The signs were not good as they struggled past Corrib 14-12 and North Dublin
13-10 in their opening games. An 8-7 defeat to Guinness followed buy they
had done enough to make the semi final against Half Moon in a repeat of last
year's final.
Hopes were high that things would improve, but they got off to a disastrous
start and trailed 6-2 early in the second quarter. They did battle hard, but
never got closer than two in arrears and eventually lost 11-8. Half Moon
went on to beat Guinness 10-4 in the final.
Brugha did bring back some silverware when UUJ engineering student Stio
McMahon was awarded the Colin Hedderman Cup as Ireland's Young Player of the
Year.
Half Moon did the double with an 8-3 win over Glenalbyn in the women's final.
