Angling: Mourne serves up salmon
Saturday, April 26, 2008
The River Mourne, which opened for business at the beginning of April is
producing some good salmon in spite of fluctuating water levels.
Mark Lucas from Sion Mills had a fish of 5.5 lbs from the Grevenue stretch
and Terry Smith, also Sion Mills had a springer of 7.5 lbs from the
Woodhole. Fish to 6 lbs have also been reported from the stretch above the
weir and from Paddy's Stream.
The River Finn in Donegal is also fishing well for spring salmon when the
conditions are right. A fish of 8 lbs was taken from the Glenmore stretch on
fly and another of 5 lbs from Cloghan Lodge. Best springer from the Finn to
date weighed 11 lbs and was taken by Sebastian McMichael.
Another lucky angler was Keiran Green who had one of 5 lbs from the Keys
stretch of the river. Frank Elliott had one of 7.5 lbs from the Lifford
Bridge stretch.
Meanwhile the Lough Neagh Wetlands Biodiversity Action Scheme has been
launched and already several projects to enhance fish habitats are under
way.
These include a project to reinstate the fisheries habitat of the Coppies
River, a small tributary of the Moyola River which suffers greatly from
pollution. Other projects include the provision of a fish pass on a weir on
the Sixmilewater and habitat improvements on the river near Ballyclare.
