Pembroke 3 Monkstown 0

Saturday, 19 April 2008

This afternoon's Irish Senior Cup final at the National Stadium, Belfield, between Dublin sides Pembroke Wanderers and Monkstown was expected to be a tight affair and so it proved, despite the scoreline.

Cup shock troopers Monkstown, who beat Leinster champions Three Rock Rovers and record holders Lisnagarvey on their path to the final, hadn't won the cup since 1914, whilst Pembroke, conquerors of Ulster Premier League champions Cookstown and then Instonians in the semi-final, were hoping to bridge an eight-year gap.

Eventually it was the individuality of Pembroke that won the day, justifying their favourites tag against the more cohesive Monkstown unit.

South African John McInroy gave Pembroke the lead from open play in the eighth minute, a lead they could not add to before the interval despite incessant pressure.

Seven minutes after the break Irish international Ronan Gormley doubled the lead, his penalty corner strike deceiving impressive Monkstown keeper Des Fitzgerald.

Another South African Craig Fulton set the seal on the victory with a third goal two minutes from time.
