Glenavon end the season on a high five

Glenavon 5 Armagh 0

Saturday, April 26, 2008

Armagh City's final game in the top flight of local football came to a dismal end as Glenavon dominated at Mourneview Park today winning 5-0.

After early dominance, Glenavon eventually took the lead when Gerard McMahon stormed down the right wing, turned inside the box and fired a low shot across goal and into the bottom corner.

Armagh's first opportunity fell to Liam Cullen 10 minutes from the interval but a good save from Tuda Murphy denied him the chance to equalise.

Another fine save was made at the other end seconds later from Stuart Addis when he punched McMahon's volley over the crossbar for a corner.

Glenavon doubled their lead as McMahon got his second of the game a minute from the break where he controlled Paul Carville's cross and scored with a delightful volley.

The day got better for the Lurgan Blues with their third goal when Carville won a free-kick on the left of the Armagh box. McMahon's effort came off the wall to the left back who passed to Conor Walsh to fire a powerful shot past Addis from 25 yards.

Mark Gracey headed wide from Peter McNeill's corner as Armagh tried to get back into the game on 57 minutes.

It was to be a rare opportunity for City as an end-of-term feeling got hold of both sides in a second-half which failed to match the first period.

There was further embarrassment for Armagh to come on 74 minutes when Mark Gracey headed Turkington's cross into his own net.

Trevor Molloy, after missing a host of chances, finally got onto the score sheet for Glenavon's fifth goal, a low and well-driven shot into the bottom corner.

A great end to the season for Glenavon and a shocking finish for poor Armagh.
